  • WELCOME!

Hi. We're Esther & Jacob. We are ATLiens who reside in Los Angeles. We take travel and lifestyle photos and make youtube videos by profession. Together, we love food, traveling, and cats! Since meeting in 2009, we've been trekking the globe - experiencing new cultures, eating all kinds of new food, exploring our hometowns, and of course, taking lots of photos.  Hope you enjoy following our adventures!

DietCoke | An Epic Overreaction

I might have a slight addiction to dietcoke. This is loosely based on Jacob’s experience with me when I run out. Hope you like it!

They call it an epic overreaction (you can watch another one here), but I call it an appropriate reaction & there are a couple reasons why I need my dietcoke… and I don’t care how much aspartame and cancer it has in each can:

  1. I don’t drink coffee, so it’s my little upper to start my day.
  2. I like to support Atlanta companies by buying their products.

Totally logical. But I will admit that I might take it a step too far. Here’s my last CVS diet coke haul:

DietCoke haul from CVS! I need my Diet Coke. Why I need my diet coke. An epic overreaction with diet coke

I do realize that it’s probably not my healthiest habit.  I do intend to conquer one of my bucketlist goals, which is to cut all soda from my diet for at least one month. My crazy health nut friends say that when you cut things out of your diet, sometimes your tastebuds change and eventually you don’t even care for certain types of food anymore.  We shall see!

*I don’t like posting youtube videos on my blog, because I know they’re really slow to load. I made an exception for this one since it helps you get to know me a little better. :)

LA Museum | LA CMA Modern Art

Along the Stanley Kubrick exhibit, we decided to check out what else was in this LA Museum. We bought a special timed ticket for the Kubrick exhibit for $20 which also allowed you to explore the rest of  LACMA.

It’s a big museum, especially compared to the ones in Atlanta.  Everything is spaced out, and I like big open spaces.  Also, the public walking spaces are really nice.

Oh and these lamps at the front of the museum!  Everyone and their moms like to take photos / video here.

I like random frames. What’s not to like?  I want these to be placeholders on my walls.

I’m not sure that I get modern art.  This was a piece called Long Haired Cheese by Robert Gober.

Let’s take a closer look at this Long Haired Cheese. Inspired yet?

Another interesting piece was this: Untitled (Elephant Dung with Chain) by David Hammons

We just like taking pictures of ourselves around the art. We’re vain like that.

What to Do in London | 36 Hours in London England

What to Do in London England in 36 Hours:

1. The London Eye (more photos from an earlier post here):

the london eye | things to do london | what to do in london, the eye london

2. Big Ben & the Elizabeth Tower.  I didn’t know until more recently, but Big Ben is just the bell from the clock tower, and the name of the clock tower is actually called Elizabeth Tower.

3. London Bridge

4. London Underground. We used the tube to get around everywhere in London. It was so easy to use. I wish we had something like this where we live!

5. Eat Fish and Chips! Some food options we ate here.

Gigs Fish and Chips | London Restaurants | Eat in London

We only had 36 Hours to explore London.  With a limited amount of time, we had to prioritize photography, food, and friends, so we only ended up going to a handful of tourist attractions. We’re not the type of travelers that like to pack our entire day full of touristy places, so for the most part we met up with friends and hung out.  If we had more time to explore the great city of London, here are a few more things I would have loved to check of my list:

6. Borough Market (apparently it’s foodie heaven)

7. Billingsgate Fish Market

8. Pub crawl in Smithfield

9. Tower of London

10. Kensington Gardens

Do we want to ride the double decker red buses? Perhaps.  Ever since Spice World, I was always curious what the experience would be like… We hope to visit London again soon! In the meantime, we’d love to hear more travel suggestions!

Where to Eat in LA | Another Binge Eating Weekend

We had some friends come into town last weekend, so we decided to go on a binge eating fest. What else is LA really good for besides the food? This is a list of where to eat in LA if you only had one day.  Well, no, I take that back.  There’s actually an overwhelming amount of good food in LA. It’s so hard to narrow down the choices. These are the options that we simply yelped close to where we happened to be.

We met up in the late afternoon at Two Guns Expresso in Manhattan Beach.  A couple of our friends were flying out that evening, so we had to find food closer to the airport.  It was the first time I ever tried a flat white.  It’s a kiwi thing from a kiwi owned place. We had no idea about flat whites although we had just come back from a trip from New Zealand.  No one had ever mentioned them to us while we were there. Well, sweet as. I am a fan.

Next for dinner, we ate at Manhattan Beach Post.  Their dishes were served tapas style. The bacon cheddar buttermilk biscuits were great (pictured below)!  The brussel sprouts were amazing. Had no idea brussel sprouts could taste so good.  We also ordered the blistering blue lake green beans, which was highly recommended by many on yelp.  Turns out they just taste like the green beans you order at any chinese restaurant. Good, but not worth it.  Not exotic enough for us asians.

Next, we headed over to Manhattan Beach Creamery for some dessert.  We ordered some sort of ice cream cookie sandwich.  It looked amazing, but the ice cream made the cookies too cold and hard to chew.  It’s like when clothes look better on the hanger.  Annoying everytime!

Afterward, we decided to make room for a second dinner at Wurstekuche:

I’m not a huge sausage fan or a fan of German food in general, but I was willing to try it because of their exotic sausages and their 4 star ratings from 4000+ reviews.  They also had a great beer selection, which is always a plus.

I had the mango chicken with jalapeno, and Jacob decided to be brave and try the rattlesnake and rabbit.  I took a bite of his, and it wasn’t too bad.  Texture-wise it was more tender than my chicken sausage, but overall tasted like a pretty normal hotdog.

We continued the night at Spring Street Bar.  We liked it because it was quiet, and it was a great place to chat.  It was also a Sunday night, so that could have something to do with it.

For lunch the next day, we tried an Argentinian place in Van Nuys called Mercado Buenos Aires.  I liked the ham and cheese empanadas best. It was like a glorified hot pocket. Where have you been all my life? And that olive oil sauce they have? Put it on EVERYTHING.

Then after we all gained 10 pounds, we sent them off to Atlanta.  Loved spending time with them. It was a nice reminder of home.

All photos were taken via iphone.  They do say, “the best camera is the one you have on you.”

There are very few places I find that I think I need to go back to twice, just because there are endless options of good food.  I thought it would be fun to do a post once a month on my monthly food discoveries in LA. Here’s what I found in the month of April:

Love it! I’m going to be a regular!:

Pretty good, but I want to try what else is out there:

  • Wurstekuche (DTLA)  - great sausages, but since I’m not a sausage girl, I consider it checked off my list.
  • Two Guns Expresso (Manhattan Beach)
  • Spring Street Bar (DTLA)
  • Ajisai (West Hollywood) – food wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t worth the price and hassle to park.

Not going back unless you pay for my meal, and I still might be kicking and screaming:

Brian @toptravelbuzz.com - There are so many good eateries in Los Angeles it’s not even funny. I love the coffee shops. May I suggest you try Urth Caffee in Santa Monica.. that place is awesome!

estherjulee - We do keep hearing about Urth Coffee. We’ll definitely check that one out! :) Thanks for the rec.

LA Museum | LA CMA Stanley Kubrick Exhibit

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art was the first LA museum we visited together. When we heard that LACMA had a Stanley Kubrick exhibit, we couldn’t resist. A friend of mine was obsessed with Stanley Kubrick in high school and introduced me to a handful of his movies. I was interested to see what goes on behind the scenes and get a glimpse of what’s in his mind. The exhibit captured his attention to detail as he prepared for films and the innovations developed and used by his team.

Even though they were only props, somehow the eeriness of the films crept up on us as we walked around.

A film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later. - Stanley Kubrick

The Stanley Kubrick exhibit is going on at LACMA until June 30, 2013.  Check it out while you have the chance! We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the rest of LACMA, and that post will be coming next thursday!

On a separate note: Now that I’m learning to blog a little more consistently, I’ve put together a blog schedule:

  • Tues - Globetrotting
  • Thurs - Local Adventures
  • every other Fri - Food (recipes and good LA eats)
